about

Music created for Lancaster University's MA Theater Studies Production Measure for Measure - A Physical Interpretation. If memory serves this was about 1991.

I apologise but I can't remember the names of any of the participants or the photographer who's pics I've used as a cover. I'm not even sure how I ended up with contact-prints, but they do give an idea of the production; I remember the lead dancer being quite mesmerizing.

I'd been doing a lot of music for Theater Group (TG) - a student society (incidentally the largest non-sport society at the university). Some of this was seen by the MA students and the lecturers and I was soon working on a number of productions for the department - sadly not much of this counted towards my degree! I made many friends through TG, some I'm still in touch with including Jo aka Miss Roberts - who I'm still working with.

Technical:
I was using the equipment that I assembled in the Lancaster Music Dpt. as part of my degree in Music, Theater and Aesthetics. This included a Mac with a sampler attached (I can't remember the details). There was no DAW so no audio sequencing, but I could configure a keyboard to play back samples at different speeds across the keys while choosing different samples using the modulation wheel; so what you hear is essentially a live performance. A Yamaha RX7 Drum Machine was also used extensively. The tracks were mixed using a Tascam Porta ii 4-Track cassette.

Some tracks feature fragments of the fabulous voice of Maddy Prior from Steeleye Span, not sure of the LP or track.

Other vocals are taken from recording discovered in a charity shop of Princess Anne and mark Phillips' wedding - prominently featuring the voice of Michael Ramsey, the Archbishop of Canterbury.

Le Mystère des Voix Bulgares, Volume 2 was plundered for choral samples - I spotted that one of the tracks appeared to based on a piece of Gregorian Chant I happened to have, so I blended the two.

I used a lot of other samples for these pieces these were filtered, sped up, slowed down, reversed etc., but sadly, after 30 years, I can't remember any more titles or artists.
